Beautiful Boy

A companion piece to his son Nic’s memoir Tweak, Beautiful Boy is David Sheff’s story of dealing with a son going through crystal meth addiction. From feeling partly responsible to watching his son’s life crumble, Sheff’s account is more measured and literary than his son’s younger outlook, but it’s no less heartbreaking and in a way the elder Sheff has the worse position watching his son slowly self destruct. The brain haemorrhage he suffers midway through the ordeal is just one example of how much crueller real life is than any fiction.
