Breaking the Rules
If getting a reader to care about the character means identifying with them, proclaiming you’ve never gone a week without sex to readers who probably go six weeks without it thanks to the demands of mortgages, real jobs and kids is one of Breaking the Rules’ many failures. This sort of slut/porn Sex and the City chic has already been done to death, but here it’s badly written, starting and stopping like 20 opening chapters instead of one book. Author Townsend constantly stops to lecture you on her liberal views, but in wanting to seem sophisticated, the constant references not to sex but the desire to drink herself stupid reveal her as something of a slapper.
