February 2009 Films
February 1st, 2009

Sharp dialogue and strong dramatic chops lift it into very affecting territory. Great work from masters of the craft (Norton) and actors who’ve appeared in their fair share of duds (Voight and more recently Farrell) make it something special.

Rent
March 2nd, 2006

At times ludicrous, mostly sloppily structured and wholly repetitive, Rent might make you one of those in the audience asking yourself why these layabouts don’t stop singing about being poverty-stricken artists and just go and get jobs

Beowulf
December 1st, 2007

As they can be put seamlessly onto digital bodies, we get to enjoy Angelina Jolie to all intents and purposes naked and portly Brit character actor Ray Winstone with washboard abs he’ll certainly never have in real life.

The Take
September 1st, 2005

With the whole American continent south of the Texas/Mexico border decisively out of the news (unless it’s to demonise one of the left-leaning republics as quasi-communists), we can be forgiven in Australia for a case of collective ignorance about conditions in South and Latin America.

Far From Heaven
February 6th, 2003

It’s hard to know what to expect from Far From Heaven. And when it’s over, it’s also hard to know what you’ve just seen. Is it a slice of 21st century societal concerns in a 50’s sitcom mindscape, or a timeless story about human frailty that just happens to be set in sugar-coated, post-war middle America?

Charlie’s Angles: Full Throttle
August 1st, 2003

Smutty double entendres? Big celebrity cameos? Ridiculous stunts and unbelievable fight scenes? Constant movie referencing and in-jokes? A paper-thin and occasionally unintelligible plot you could write on a business card? Check.
