Adobe Touch Apps
August 4th, 2012

You can lead a horse to water, as the saying goes… In the same way, you can give a photographer, video editor or creative pro a tablet, but will he or she do more than fire up Angry Birds? Adobe is betting so, giving design and A/V pros an environment completely centred around touch and Cloud services.

DV Filmmaking from Start to Finish
October 1st, 2009

It reads like a lot of other books you might have read on being a great filmmaker, explaining the terminology of an extreme close up versus a long shot and which boom mike is best for a particular set-up. But each section gives you a feel for what you’re in for doing so in the digital world, and they’re not tacked-on subchapters either, the text drilling right down into explaining the digital approach.

YouTube: An Insider’s Guide to Climbing the Charts
July 1st, 2009

It’s not until Chapter 7; Building Your Audience that the book starts to make good on the promise we interpreted from the title, not expecting shooting advice or a YouTube How-to guide (not that they’ll be unwelcome depending on your skillset). Classic Scene: Cloverfield
October 16th, 2011

Watching for tracking shots is always fun, but they work best when you don’t even realise they’re there. Director Matt Reeves’ Godzilla homage Cloverfield had a unique device that allowed him to include some impressive sequences — the story about a giant beast attacking New York was all done from the point of view of a camcorder user, Blair Witch Project-style.

Final Cut Pro 6
December 1st, 2007

The Avid suite of products are still the first choice for pros, but Final Cut proved long ago it could do the same job, and with so many good features both new and old, Final Cut Pro 6 edges Apple one step closer to dominating yet another field.

Classic Scene: Contact
August 7th, 2011

Zemeckis’ take on Carl Sagan’s classic novel of first contact with alien life is reverent and stately. Sensitive and intelligent performances from Jodie Foster and her costars give weight to the real-life struggle facing the Search for Extra Terrestrial Intelligence (SETI) better than a million alien invasion movies ever could. Contact’s secret sauce is the […]
