An exercise in pure plotting, it's a classic heist movie. It tells a large story economically by showing us what we need to see and arranging the elements of the story according to where they fall, where they lie in relation to each other, and their causes and effects.

In going for a good time, old-fashioned monster movie, with none of the all-too-real terror of Wolf Creek, McLean knew he was inheriting a subgenre with strong conventions that can be the storyteller's best friend as well as worst enemy, but he gets the balance almost perfect in every regard.

It won't be for everyone, but everyone who sees it will get something out of it. Like 2005's In Her Shoes, it's a chick flick that almost perfectly encapsulates so many things about life and all its idiosyncracies.

“Probably my first and biggest contribution to that was in casting Robert. In many ways he overshadowed the character of Iron Man and ended up defining the film, and I think people are very excited to see Robert in this role.”

But a funny thing happens about halfway through the film. You realise that — Like Hulk — you haven't seen a lot of Iron Man mayhem. And the reason is because (gasp!) you genuinely do like the characters, and their stories are as interesting as the obligatory action.
