I, Robot

Maybe that’s a bit harsh. I, Robot is a good movie with outstanding action, Will Smith’s signature 80’s-era, black action comedy-inspired wisecrack persona, cool visions of the future and as much of a message as any event movie allows.

In the late eighties it was the Vietnam War getting plundered for stories of different incidents or angles, each more graphic and ‘realistic’ than the last. Since Saving Private Ryan, everything from Thin Red Line to Band of Brothers has given us easily packaged doses of heroic WWII feats.

The movie marketeers are at it again, trying to stay one step ahead of the geeks, kids and fans. Remember years ago (in 1999) when movie marketing was a world away from what it is now, a world away from what it had been a few years before that?

Rob Cohen’s commentary is interesting from a technical and anecdotal point of view, and makes you appreciate just how much work goes into a project of this scope. Ironically, he talks about very fine details that seem immaterial to such a brainless action movie.
