White Planet
The renaissance of cinema documentaries was bound to let loose a few duds. Not that White Planet is a bad film, but it feels too familiar to make an impact in the wake of innovations like we saw in 2001’s Travelling Birds.
Charting a year in the life of far north Canada would have been a huge task but it feels like an old ABC nature series. In fact it’s not even that informative, glossing over scientific fact in favour of poetic description interspersed with godawful native Inuit music. It’s accompanied by interviews with just about every crewmember involved and bland, unengaging featurettes on the making of the film and torturous soundtrack.
