Man From Snowy River Arena Spectacular, The

April 1st, 2003 DVD Reviews, Film, Filmink

The Film

One of the most intriguing ideas for a stage production in ages — Banjo Paterson’s immortal wild horse chase bought to life in a stadium — all live.

The Sight & Sound

The sound is crisp and clear throughout but the picture during the show isn’t the best (but it must have been a nightmare filming from in the stands of a live stadium show).

The Extras

If you’re not a fan of the show itself (or a horse person), watching the extras will be like going to the Agricultural show with that old Uncle who insisted on traipsing all through the cattle and produce pavilions before letting you buy any showbags.

There’s a pretty thorough making of documentary where co-creators Ignatius Jones and David Atkins lead you through the casting, music, horseplay and staging.

Between the montage clip introducing all the horses and the live woodchopping competition, you’ll think you’re trapped in Australiana hell if it isn’t your fancy.

Cast, crew and rider bios are good for the trivia and make you realise how many big names you’ve seen but can’t place.

The Worth

Great if you like that sort of thing — if not, steer (get it?) well clear. Interesting to see the DVD director’s name as Alan Smithee — the name a director uses after wanting his name subsequently removed from a project.
