Futurama: Bender’s Big Score

March 6th, 2008 DVD Reviews, Film, Xpress

The first example of the burgeoning power of the Internet fanboys, Futurama wasn’t pulling the ad dollars the timeslot warranted when Fox cancelled it in 2003, leaving millions of fans heartbroken.

The weight of their devotion has led to this, the first of four feature lengths Futurama movies, and it’s evident from the first minutes the show’s lost none of the incendiary zing of the series. When Fry, Leelu and co are fired from their jobs as galactic couriers, Professor Farnsworth explains that the idiotic network executives have killed them off, all while the huge neon ‘Box network’ sign outside flickers on and off to read ‘Fox Network’.

From there it’s a rip roaring ride and belly laughs come thick and fast in a tale of unrequited love, time travel, snarky aliens determined to make off with the most powerful device in the galaxy and the usual characters you love.

There are a few interesting extras such as a bizarre segment where the creative brains behind the show assemble in a lecture theatre and grill a scientist about the science of Futurama, but the commentary is best. Creator Matt Groening is joined by so many cast and crew it’s like a frat party of sniggers, one liners and camaraderie that’s as funny as the movie.
